Whitehall was built in 1729 and was for a time, home to the renowned philosopher Bishop George Berkeley. The centuries-old residence features an array of fascinating patchwork design features, including a hip-roof, a long, sloping lean-to in the back and a Palladian doorway. A small garden contains plants that were known in the area in the mid-1700s including an apple tree descended from a seedling planted by Johnny Appleseed. It resides about three miles northeast of downtown Newport in Middletown, near the Newport State Airport.
